It’s time for an August Break

August is upon us …. already!

Such a different feeling than July.

July is all about jumping wildly into the heat and promise of summer vacations, long lazy days packed full of water, sandy beaches and sunshine…. it is definitely a time for all of us to shed our pasty winter skin and spend time half naked in the blazing sun, soaking up as much of that life giving Vitamin D as we can safely tolerate.

Somehow it’s always a surprise to realize that August is suddenly and mysteriously upon us and slowly the energy begins to shift.

The endless evenings become oh so slightly shorter, vacations are winding down, and somehow it seems we are spending more time back in the mall and less time in the sunshine and the water, less time spent with family and friends, splashing, laughing, eating and drinking… and more time spent with strangers who never seem to smile….

As our focus gradually shifts to the endings instead of the beginnings, it’s easy to forget that this IS still summer! The days ARE still very long and often VERY hot. Even though we have to spend more time working on that outdoor to-do list – the list that seemed ‘no problem’ back in June – these are still our summer days and need to be cherished as much as possible.

Paying attention to August as best we can, consciously choosing to remind ourselves that our summer days are precious and full of irreplaceable moments and memories – this is important and has incredible value.

Susannah Conway (susannahconway.com) has created another ‘August Break’ – a wonderful way to give ourselves ‘a month of paying attention’.

Every day of August she offers a prompt for a photo (or a poem) and a way to share with a community of like minded folks… through Instagram, Facebook or a blog.

Susannah says:

“This is a community project that has no real rules —  the idea is to simply take a photograph every day for the whole of August. That’s it. Pause, look around you and shoot what you see. Live inside each moment. Pay attention to what’s there.”

AUGUST 1 ….. MORNING!
AUGUST 2 ….. GOLD
AUGUST 3 ….. ROSES
AUGUST 4 ….. WHERE I LIVE (THE VIEW FROM MY FRONT WINDOW).
AUGUST 5 …. BICYCLE …. FOUND DOWN THE LANE, WHAT A GREAT IDEA FOR RE-PURPOSING THAT BELOVED OLD BIKE!
AUGUST 6 ….. FAVOURITE NOVEL …. BECAUSE MY FAVOURITE NOVEL IS A 2 HOUR DRIVE AWAY – WE HAVE A PHOTO OF MY DAUGHTER READING A NOVEL ( I HAVE TO ADMIT I DO NOT KNOW IF IT’S HER FAVOURITE, BUT IT COULD BE…. )
AND BECAUSE I COULDN’T DECIDE WHICH PICTURE I LIKED THE BEST, I POSTED 2 PHOTOS TO INSTAGRAM FOR AUGUST 5 ….. I DO LOVE IT WHEN THERE ARE NO RULES!
AUGUST 7 …. GLASS …. 2 SUMMER FAVOURITES, ALWAYS FOUND IN GLASS… 🙂

Those are my offerings for the August Break, so far. Who knows if I’ll make it all the way through… doesn’t really matter ….

It’s simple and fun and a lovely creative way to honour August and perhaps it will feel as if the last days of summer are not slipping through our fingers quite so quickly.

On a more personal note…. you may have noticed that my last ‘brilliant idea’ to stay motivated with my photography (see previous blog about ‘Beauty’) has fallen by the proverbial wayside.

Which leaves me still searching for motivation… still feeling driven to photograph, still feeling rudderless in the storm of creative urges.

If you are feeling the same way, then at least I know I am not alone and perhaps I will keep sharing any ideas that I find motivating here, on my sadly neglected little blog….

For now, I’m happy to jump into Susannah’s August Break and I would love it if you would join me. I’m posting on Instagram with the hashtag #augustbreak2017 and I will share a few more pics here on the blog as well.

Meet you on Instagram? I hope so!!

In the meantime… Happy August! Let’s make the best of the last of summer!
